1). Cut strips of ribbon the same length as the handles of the canvas bag.
2). Stitch the ribbon down the center, along the handles with a sewing machine or needle and thread. Use thin ribbon to create a stripe down the center of the handle, or use a wide ribbon that will cover the entire handle.
3). Paint a scene or design with fabric paint and paintbrushes onto the bag. Use stencils to paint exact shapes or create your own art with brushes alone.
4). Allow the paint to dry according to the package instructions and flip the bag to paint the other side, if you like.
5). Sew patches onto the bag to display your name, interests or funny phrases you like.
