Career Highlights:
  • Known as one of the most versatile players his era, he's known as perhaps the best all-around Cuban player of all-time.


  • He hit .307 in 12 seasons in the Negro Leagues, .317 in 10 seasons in the Mexican League and .291 in 24 seasons in Cuba.
  • Was 119-57 as a pitcher in Mexico, and had an incredible 1938 season in Mexico - .387 batting and 18-2 with a 0.90 ERA as a pitcher.
  • Threw the first no-hitter in Mexican League history.
  • Combined stats in all leagues: .302, at least 130 home runs and a 252-132 pitching record.

After Baseball:
  • Served as Minister of Sport in Cuba.
