Cauterization in ayurveda is a process, where the unhealthy and ailing body surface or a tissue is destroyed or burnt with the help of a heated appliance or an electric current or by freezing. An acidic or cutting agent like the kshar karma is also made use of for the treatment.

Significance of cauterization

Agnikarma is better than medicinal therapy, surgical treatment and kshar karma due to the following reasons:

€ Those diseases that cannot be nursed back to health by medicines, surgery and kshar karma is healed by Dahan karma or cauterization.

€ There is no failure in treating by cauterization, which can sometimes be noticed in medicines, kshar karma and operation regarding certain diseases.

Types of Cauterization are:

€ Tuchchh dagdha or scarce agnikarma
€ Durdaghda or inappropriate burning surgery
€ Aati dagdha or powerful or excess cauterization
€ Samyak dagdha or appropriate agnikarma

Substances or tools used for cauterization in ayurveda:

Jambavaustha, needles, probes, metal coins, and rings made from different metals like gold, silver, panch dhatu etc, are the types of appliance used. Pippali, cow's tooth, seed of bhallatak, honey, ghee and jaggery are different substances utilized.

Kinds of Patterns:

€ Linear pattern is made use of, when the span of wound is greater
€ Circular pattern for tumor
€ Dotted outline for blood vessels
€ Flat designs are applied on the skin.

Location of heat burns are:

€ Skin
€ Muscles
€ Ligaments, joints, blood vessels and bones ( as per the requirement of the disease)

Prior treatment:

The decision to imply cauterization is taken after the disease of the patient is examined carefully. The routine blood tests include blood sugar, CBC and more are carried out. Dahan karma cannot take place on an empty stomach except in the cases like fistula in ano, renal calculus or disease of oral cavity. In such conditions the patient should take a light diet. Tetanus injection is applied before cauterization.

Process of cauterization

The instruments that are to be used must be properly heated. The location that has to undergo agnikarma is cleaned with normal saline and not with spirit. Then bhallataka oil is applied to that spot. The patterns of agnikarma rely on the wound or lesion. Heat burns are applied to the emergence of symptoms.

During the agnikarma there will be cracking sound. The burning of skin and hair will give out bad odor. The skin gets contracted, inflamed and reddish. After the conclusion of this procedure ghee and honey is applied on the cut. This helps to lessen the burning pain and helps to heal fast. Pain killers are also prescribed, if the pain is unbearable.

Cauterization in ayurveda can be treated to cure many diseases including piles, warts, pigmented moles, ulcer with extreme granulation, heel pains, headaches, sprains, sciatica, arthritis, migraine and more.

Certain diseases and situations that cannot undergo cauterization include weak and thin patients, patients having dominance of vata and pitta, excessive alcohol consumption, fever, diabetes, internal bleeding, multiple boils, pregnancy, ruptured viscera and more.
