Rome

• Every spring in the heart of Rome, the 18th century Spanish Steps are transformed into an azalea garden, with pots of these beautiful blooms lining the route. Ascending from the Piazza di Spagna, the Steps are a sea of scarlet flowers, said to be a traditional welcome for the anniversary of spring. At the top end of the Steps is the Trinita dei Monti Church in the piazza of the same name. Make the 138-step climb to the top, or take the elevator that is part of the nearby Metro complex. Other interesting places in the vicinity include Babington's Tea Room serving traditional English teas and pastries, the Trevi Fountain, the Villa Borghese park, and the chic Via Veneto with its up-scale hotels.

• In London, the Queen's Official Birthday is celebrated every year with a traditional ceremony known as "Trooping the Colour." This tradition stems from the 17th century, when a regiment's colors were trooped before its soldiers every day to ensure that they would be recognizable in times of battle. Today's ceremony involves about 1400 officers in military regalia, 200 horses and 400 musicians. Queen Elizabeth II takes the salute.
