Who hasn't ridden a bike as a kid? We might even say that one's childhood would not be complete if one didn't learn to ride a bike. It's really a wonder then why most of those who did somehow lost their love for the bike and just went on to try other more interesting and exciting activities. Or it could have been because they fell and had bruises all over their bodies and thus their parents forced them to pursue other physical activities or sports. But we know that riding a bike is a skill that is never forgotten so that the impulse to ride a bike will always remain forever. So think back €" you might realize that you did know how to bike and perhaps, it is the right time to bring out that rusting mountain bike out of the garage and ride it this weekend.

Of course, if it is mountain biking that you want, you'd have to prepare yourself and make sure that you and the bike are in the best of condition for the ride. But get a mountain bike and not just any other kind? Just as there are different types of motorcycles and cars that people use for various purposes, so there are too, several types of bikes for different kinds of people who want to ride on a variety of terrain. There are road bikes that people use for level, smooth grounds. These are what bike racers use on races such as the Tour de France. Bike commuters use a type of bike that can easily be pedaled and maneuvered on city streets. Mountain bikes on the other hand are special bikes designed for riding on mountain trails where in fact there may not be any definable roads or paths. While non-initiates might shun such trails, mountain bikers love them for the thrill and unmatched excitement that they offer. Mountain bikes are virtually all-terrain vehicles that you can use almost anywhere you can possibly ride. But while it is such a versatile human transport, you will need personal protective gear in order to ride safely and thus enjoy the experience more. Wearing a helmet for example is non-negotiable as it will protect the rider's head in case of a fall. No one wants to have an accident but just like a motorcycle rider is required to wear a helmet, so is a bike rider required as well.

Do not dismiss a simple fall as a minor accident because any kind of fall from a bike can be potentially dangerous. For the serious mountain biker, some of the most important mountain biking protective gear includes upper and lower body armor, knee pads, elbow pads, neck protection and wrist protection. While riding at night might not be for everyone, it would not be bad if you also install headlights and taillights in your bike just in case you need to ride when it's already dark.
