How to Get Puka Shells
- 1). Travel to a beach in Hawaii or the Philippines. These two locations offer the largest quantities of puka shells on their beaches. The climate in either of those locations is perfect for the small shellfish that eventually become the puka shells.
- 2). Start your search in a remote area of the beach. The more tourist-filled beaches will not be as abundant with puka shells, since there will could many people hunting for shells.
- 3). Puka shells can be found in large piles on the white sand beaches. Puka shells are small white or brown disks with a tiny hole in the middle. You will have to do a lot of searching to find enough for a necklace, which is why authentic puka shell necklaces command a higher price than their manmade counterparts.
- 4). Collect your shells in a basket that can safely get wet. Shovel the small shells into the basket using a handheld garden trowel. Once you have filled the basket halfway, sit down in the sand at the edge of the surf and sort your shells, washing them off in the process. Keep the puka shells that aren't damaged.
- 5). Return to the collection area until you have enough to make a bracelet or necklace. Depending on the abundance of puka shells on your particular beach, it may take a few hours to collect enough to make jewelry.
