How to Take Care of the Home
- 1). Create a daily schedule to perform at least one home-related task to maintain your living space. Post the schedule on a large dry erase board in a prominent location.
- 2). Purchase proper cleaning and organizational tools to keep your home tidy. These include surface cleaners, disinfectants, floor cleaners, furniture polishers, a broom, a mop, cloths, a vacuum and carpet cleaners. For organizational purposes, purchase closet organizers, storage crates, filing boxes and baskets.
- 3). Choose one or more rooms to focus on in your rotating daily schedule. Common rooms include the living room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry and rec room of your home. Keep in mind that you can split the tasks you must complete in each room up into groups. For instance, you can choose to clean the bathroom toilet, tub and sink on one day, then organize your linen closet on another. In the kitchen, you might empty the dishwasher on one day and mop the floors on another. Set daily tasks that you can reasonably achieve depending on your overall schedule.
- 4). Change and wash all bedding (including pillow cases) in the house every one or two weeks. Vacuum your carpets at least twice a week and have them cleaned every 12 to 18 months.
- 5). Establish an "in and out" system in your home office or a similar area where you handle household paperwork. Place a basket for incoming documents that you need to address (such as new bills) and a box for outgoing documents, such as junk mail and old bills to shred. Make shredding or otherwise disposing of these outgoing documents one of your daily tasks during the week to keep your office or working area clean.
- 6). Remove trash from the home promptly the night before each scheduled trash pickup. Don't allow trash to accumulate over a few days to avoid bugs and unsavory smells in your house. Remember to spray and wipe down your home trash bins with disinfectant at least once every couple of weeks before replacing the trash bag. Clean pet areas each day as well and remove any waste from the area each trash night.
