Ceftriaxone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic. The most common of its uses are treating bacterial infections and preventing infections during surgery. It is mainly used in the treatment of skin infections, bone infections (osteomyelitis ) and middle ear infections (otitis media). It is also a choice drug for the treatment of community acquired or mild- moderated health - care associated pneumonia and also for bacterial meningitis. But although it is used so much, like any other medicine even ceftriaxone also has several side- effects.

The most common side- effects of this drug are pain, warmth or swelling at the injection site, unexplained rashes, diarrhea and increase in lever enzymes. These are just some of the minor side- effects of ceftriaxone. Whereas some of the major side- effects are hives, blood in stools, throat or mouth sores, unexplained bleeding or bruising, severe rashes, itching, wheezing, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, swelling of the throat or peeling of the skin. If you are infected with any of these symptoms, you must immediately discontinue using that drug.

Before using this medicine you must tell your doctor if you are allergic to any kind of medicine. And also if you kidney disease, liver disease, gall bladder problems, a stomach or intestinal problem such as colitis or if you are malnourished. Same is the case if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant during treatment. That is mainly because this drug can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medicine if you are breast- feeding a baby. Do not use this drug for a child without a doctor's consent. And never give a child more than the prescribed dose.

Just as in the case of other medicines, ceftriaxone should be used carefully and kept out of children's reach. Similarly, should be stored safely, as mentioned by the manufacturers.
