How to Remove a Glass Tile Mural from a Wall
- 1). Protect all surfaces around the glass tile mural. Use painter's tape to position a drop cloth under the mural. Cover furniture and remove accessories from the area. The more items you move out of the way, the less clean up you will have.
- 2). Put on work gloves, goggles, a dust mask and sturdy shoes or work boots before you pick up your heavy-duty screwdriver or chisel and hammer. It is easy to get distracted and forget about your own safety.
- 3). Chisel away the grout between a few pieces in the glass mural. Take your heavy-duty screwdriver or chisel and gently wedge it under a glass piece, working from the top of the piece down. Pull the screwdriver or chisel towards you. If it resists, use your hammer and pound on the screwdriver or chisel to dislodge the piece of glass tile. Glass will scatter and break as you work. Continue removing the glass tile, trying to do as little damage as possible to the wall behind the mural. Clean up, as you work, using a shop vacuum. Broken glass is very sharp. Cleaning up, as you go, helps prevent injury while keeping the dust and debris down.
- 4). Examine the wall after the entire glass tile mural has been removed. You might need to sand off adhesive that has been left behind and add spackle to fill in gouges in the wall. When all is said and done, it may be easier to replace the section of wall. Use your own judgment to decide whether wall repair or replacement will be easier and, consequently, more cost-effective.
