Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarships for a High School Senior
- As of 2011, Alpha Kappa Alpha's national chapter awards three types of scholarships: undergraduate scholarships, graduate scholarships and the Alice S. Marriott Scholarship. The undergraduate and graduate scholarships are divided into two categories: need-based and merit-based scholarships. The Alice S. Marriott Scholarship is available to students from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in hospitality careers.
- Local chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha exist in most major cities. These local chapters do community service projects, such as mentoring, tutoring and educational outreach. Although Alpha Kappa Alpha is geared toward African Americans, local scholarships are available to students from all racial backgrounds, and most local scholarships consider financial need. High school seniors interested in applying can find a list of local chapters on Alpha Kappa Alpha's website.
- In addition to the application form, Alpha Kappa Alpha scholarship applications require a high school or college transcript. Some applications also require at least one essay, and others request a letter of recommendation. Local scholarships often request in-person interviews. Since scholarship committees want to invest in promising students, they often have minimum GPA requirements.
- Organizations that are similar to Alpha Kappa Alpha give scholarships to promising high school seniors. Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta are two other sororities geared toward African Americans, and their local and national chapters award scholarships to high school and currently enrolled college students. Students can find a list of these local chapters on Delta Sigma Theta's and Zeta Phi Beta's websites.
