GTO Resources

    • The Pontiac GTO is a storied American muscle car that was produced from the 1964 to 1974 model years. Pontiac's advertising was based on high performance, but in early 1963 GM issued an order to its divisions banning them from participating in auto racing. Pontiac's chief engineer, John DeLorean, and McManus ad agency executive, Jim Wangers, figured a way around the edict by offering a GTO option package on existing LeMans and Tempest models. Many car enthusiasts mark this as the kickoff of the golden era of muscle cars, putting big engines and adding horsepower to mid-size, moderately priced production cars. Pontiac attached the GTO label every few years to cars produced after 1975, but none stayed in production for long.

    GM Heritage Center

    • The GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Mich., offers the widest array of GM restoration parts and original manuals available. It has more than 200 classic GM cars of all divisions on display. Surprisingly, though, it does not offer as much information and history of the GTO as many muscle and classic car enthusiast sites do.

    Edmunds

    • Edmunds was founded in 1966 to offer new and used car pricing guides. It has grown to become one of the largest independent automotive pricing and information companies in the world. It offers a history of the Pontiac GTO that is neither fawning nor hostile. For straightforward information it is a useful place to start.

    Pontiac Enthusiast Sites

    • A little browsing will bring up many sites specifically geared towards fans of the Pontiac brand. One of the most thorough is We Love Pontiacs, which covers every aspect from past models, history, memorabilia, and owner forums.

    Muscle Car Sites

    • Muscle car clubs offer information on all high-performance, production cars. They are particularly helpful in locating paints, interior materials and customizing kits. Highly opinionated, they nonetheless offer performance information and reviews that will give you a better understanding of how your GTO should perform and look. The Muscle Car Club began in 1995 as a collection of websites devoted to American-made muscle cars. It offers links to a broad array of other sites and offers a registry for existing classic muscle cars.

    Classic Car Sites

    • Classic car sites specialize in all older cars that have become sentimental or niche favorites. They can help with information on both the Pontiac GTO and also offer a broader look at the cars of the era in which the GTO was produced. Many also offer links for buying and selling particular classic cars.
