Though cholesterol is often portrayed as the bad guy, you should know how your body actually needs it to function properly.
Since there are two kinds of cholesterol, the bad cholesterol - known as the LDL - and the good one - known as HDL, learning how to differentiate the two is essential so that you know how to avoid the bad one.
The good one is needed by the body to produce hormones and nutrients, while the bad one should of course be kept to a minimum level in the body.
Bad cholesterol can cause many health problems, that much is undeniable.
One of the main concerns is the fact that it can latch onto artery walls, which subsequently blocks the main arteries.
This is not something that your heart will appreciate - as blocked arteries mean a disruption of the blood flow to the heart.
Heart disease is just one of the dangerous illnesses caused by bad cholesterol.
When people mention they have cholesterol problems, the best thing to do is to try and reduce the level of LDL in the body.
This can be done by following a balanced diet.
Other than cutting down the consumption of foods that are ridden with LDL, such as meat, eggs, seafood and dairy products - you can also eat foods that are known to reduce the LDL levels in the body.
Trans fatty acids, found mostly in canned and packaged foods, should be avoided.
The same goes with microwave popcorn and French fries - however appetizing they are.
Eliminating these foods could cut down the level of LDL in your body.
Finding better substitutes could make all the difference in your attempt to live healthily.
Raising the level of good cholesterol in the body is also one of the ways you can do to balance your overall cholesterol levels.
The presence of HDL can offset the bad one, or LDL, in the body.
This means excess cholesterol can be distributed to the liver - to be later excreted out of the body.
Apart from following a balanced diet, consider changing your lifestyle into a healthier one.
Do exercises regularly to maintain your fitness, as it would also help improve your heart condition and how nutrients are being transported throughout the body.
Try to cut down on your smoking or drinking habit - or consider quitting completely.
At the same time, make sure to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water every day.
