Deck Installation Tools
- Installing a deck is a job of its own that requires its own set of tools. Whether you've cut your lumber from scratch or bought a deck kit from your home and garden center, the next step is easier if you gather your equipment ahead of time. Like most jobs, it's best to use the right tool rather than improvise. Besides, it's an excuse to acquire more tools.
- You'll need work gloves, safety goggles and reasonably thick gloves. You may also want knee pads. For sun safety, wear sunblock and a hat with a wide brim.
- You'll definitely need a power drill, complete with screwdriver and drill bits. In many cases, you'll want your power saw handy. A good kit will come precut, but you may find a need to make an occasional adjustment. You'll also need a power cord long enough to service the farthest part of the deck from your outlet.
- Although most decks call for screws rather than nails, you'll want a hammer to nudge stubborn parts into place. If you have one, use a rubber drywall hammer to avoid marking up your wood. If you don't, fold a washcloth to pad the wood you'll hit. You'll also want a level to make sure your deck stays plumb.
