If you just purchased a digital SLR camera then you have made a wise investment and as I am sure you know not a cheap one.

But with all the capabilities of this type of camera I am sure you will feel that every penny was well spent. If you are not completely familiar with or are new to photography with a digital SLR camera this article will give you a few tips to get you on your way.

First - Don't ignore the owner's manual

Too many people try to start right in without even glancing over the manual. This is a big mistake, I don't care how many cameras you have used before every camera is different in its own way.

It's well worth the time to read and then re-read the manual again. Every brand of camera offers you features that can be exclusive to that brand.

Without reading the manual there could be some very cool stuff that you didn't even know existed. Read the manual and make sure you start to learn how to use your new camera correctly.

Two - Seek help with an online community

Let's face it, with the internet and all the blogs and forums a ton of help is just a mouse click away.

Do a search  on SLR cameras plus blogs or forums. Many will come up start searching through some for help and see what comes up. When you find one you like not only will you have instant access to help, but you can be part of a community and eventually you will be helping others.

Also don't forget tutorials and youtube. Do a search using your camera description plus tutorials on google or youtube and you can get some great stuff showing you hands on training on just about anything you want to do with your SLR camera.

Three - Take a local photography class

Spend a few weeks taking lessons on the basics. Believe me unless you are a professional these classes can show you things you just aren't going to figure out on your own.

Things like lighting, backgrounds, how to pose your subjects, camera settings, speeds, lens focus and so much more. So don't be shy about signing up and getting to know other camera enthusiasts.

Having a partner while taking pictures and bouncing ideas of one another is a great way to learn and teach at the same time.

Four - Start taking pictures

Let's face it you're not going to get good unless you get out there and start taking pictures. You are going to want to know the best way to handle your new SLR digital camera so get out there and start taking pictures where ever you go.

Don't be one of those people who go out and buy a great expensive camera just because they always wanted one only to have it sit on the shelf collecting dust.

Get out into the woods and take pictures of nature, landscapes. Go to the beach or a park and take pictures of people interacting. There is nothing like on the job training to get good at anything.

Plus you will be getting out and enjoying life, and instead of sitting in front of the TV, you can be sitting in front of computer uploading your pictures and checking out your progress on a daily basis.
