How to Care for Lignum Vitae Wood
- 1
In general, most finishes can be safely damp-mopped with a white vinegar and water solution.mop head image by green308 from Fotolia.com
Check manufacturer instructions for product care. Care and cleaning of hardwoods varies depending on finishes. Many items made from lignum vitae are friction rubbed, resulting in a highly polished finish from its own resin. Oil cleaners and waxes should not be used on polyurethane finishes, which require specific cleaners. - 2

Dust frequently with dust mop, feather duster, or dry soft rag. Lignum vitae may be the hardest of woods, but it's still best to remove grit and debris regularly from anything constructed from such a valued wood. - 3

Determine the source of the stain should a stain occur. Lignum vitae does not stain easily because it is so dense and mold-resistant. For organic stains -- blood, wine, tea or berries -- apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball and dab at the stain. Then use an enzyme cleaner, applied with an old toothbrush. Wipe with a damp rag and allow to dry.
