How to Spend a Day in New Orleans

Wear good walking shoes, since parking can a challenge. Find a place to park for the day either on the street or by the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where there is daily parking for a fee. Walk towards the waterfront, as it tends to be cooler and there are many ongoing activities. To capture views of the city from the water, walk to Canal Street and pick up the free ferry ride that runs every hour. Walk from the ferry terminal to the indoor shopping mall along the water at the Shops at Canal Place. Enjoy the mix of restaurants and shops that are housed in the air conditioned interior and still enjoy the view along the historic Mississippi River. - 4

Check out the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas for their ever-changing exhibit. Enjoy the air conditioning while learning about the marine life and then come back out to the warmth and breezes from the Mississippi River. Watch the reconditioned Steamboat Natchez billow out plumes of steam while sounding its constant music among the stream of barges and water traffic. - 5

Walk Bourbon Street during the daylight and enjoy the classic porches and iconic architecture that is the essence of this town. Instead of going to one restaurant for a large meal, pick out a few different restaurants and try a sampling of regional appetizers. - 6

Meander through the French Market and enjoy not just the shops and shuttered houses, but also the street musicians that frequent the area. Pick up some souvenirs from the open-air markets in the French Market as you sip some of the delicious cafe au lait, a traditional mixture of coffee and chicory with milk. Enjoy the handmade arts and crafts from this market, the oldest in the country since 1791. - 8

Plan an evening by trying to pick one restaurant from the hundreds of amazing choices that New Orleans offers. After dinner follow your ear to enjoy some fantastic jazz for an hour or two from one of the many spots throughout the waterfront area. Check out one of the old streetcars if your feet are getting tired, for an inexpensive way to get from one side of the town to the other.
