The Duties of Being a Bridesmaid

When my girlfriend asked me to be her bridesmaid last year, I was elated. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Before you say "I do" to your girlfriend, here are some of the bridesmaid duties that you should know about

First, you have to wear and pay for the dress that they pick out! My sister is in a wedding this summer and her dress is hideous! On top of paying two hundred dollars for the dress, she had to pay another eighty for alterations and to buy matching shoes. All for an outfit that she will never wear again.

Next, there is the bridal shower. As a bridesmaid, it is your duty to plan and organize the shower. That means securing a location, sending out invitations, preparing or ordering food, and, of course being there the day of the shower. When I was a bridesmaid, I spent the entire three hour long shower helping stack opened presents.

Then there's the bachelorette party, as well. It is the bridesmaid's task to help plan a fun time for the bride and all of her girlfriends. With some brides being high maintenance, bachelorette parties are now often destination parties, with the bridal party travelling to cities or even islands that please the bride.

Finally, there is the day before the wedding and the actual wedding day itself. The day before the wedding involves any necessary primp work, such as getting nails done, and the rehearsal. The rehearsal is usually about an hour long followed by a dinner. Then comes the wedding day itself. For the wedding I was in, I had a color-coded chart for where I was supposed to be from nine in the morning to midnight that night. It began with hair and makeup then proceeded to dresses, pictures, and so on. Needless to say, as a bridesmaid, it is your duty to attend to the bride and make this the best day of her life.

Essentially, while being asked to be a bridesmaid is a great honor, it is not an easy task! Before you say yes, make sure you take everything into consideration. It's better to be honest at the beginning than to back out later on in the game and perhaps ruin a friendship. Despite all the duties, being a bridesmaid can still be one of the best experiences you can share with a friend. You just have to make sure your friendship is worth all the hard work!
