What if fast food restaurants, libraries, movie theatres and retail stores start busting down the door to hire your teen? Is that possible? Can this really happen in this economy? What is this teen doing to warrant so much positive feedback from potential employers? It could be several things.
1.
When the teen visited the establishment and ask for the application or fill out the application on the computer, how did he look/act? How did he/she present themselves? Were they professional even though they were just inquiring about work? All of these things matter to the owner or the manager and they will remember the teen that was professional and had that something special quality and will make a notation on the application.
2.
Was the application filled out correctly? One of the biggest pet peeves with managers are if you can't follow directions on how to complete an application how will you be able to follow directions for the job in question.
3.
Did the teen seem interested and excited during the interview? Believe me no one wants to hire a person who doesn't show any enthusiasm for the job.
A teen should come to the interview ready to answer questions with excitement and a sense of gratitude.
(Some teenagers come in the interview thinking the manager or owner owes them something.
) 4.
How was the teen appearance? Did the teen smell fresh? Were the clothes they were wearing appropriate? If you are in doubt always dress up than down.
Hopefully you do not smoke or drink but if you do please forgo until after the interview.
You do not want to take chances the person hiring just happens to be allergic or so turn off that a teen is smoking or drinking at their age.
5.
Does your teen have an extra edge such as a work readiness certification, college credits or worthwhile extracurricular activities? Managers tend to favor teens that have something positive going on in their lives.
They want a teen that understands the marketplace and has excellent soft skills.
If your teen lacks soft skills or would like to get started in doing volunteer work/activities they can go to their guidance counselor or look into a career readiness program.
6.
Is your teen's cell phone music free? If a manager or owner calls a teen's number and they have to listen to a song, chances are they will hang up and call the next person on the list.
Please take music off the phone while you are looking for a job.
If your teen follows these steps, chances are they will be turning down jobs as well!
