    Weapon

    • Sniper rifles in "Call of Duty 4" come in two different styles, the bolt action rifle and the semi-automatic rifle. The type of rifle to use depends on the situation and the style of the sniper. Bolt action rifles have far better stopping power and dead-on accuracy. They are typically able to kill an enemy with a single shot, but have a delay before a second shot can be fired. The semi-automatic rifles lose some of the stopping power and accuracy in favor of a higher rate of fire. A player who is more accurate will benefit from the single-shot kills of a bolt action rifle. If the sniper must work from closer ranges, or stay mobile through the match, the quick fire rate of the semi-automatic may be a better choice.

    Perks

    • Many perks are outright useless to the sniper. The best choices for the first perk are either the claymores or the bandolier. Claymores defend the sniper's perch, while the bandolier allows the sniper to be mobile or work at closer ranges. The second perk should be stopping power unless playing in hardcore mode. In hardcore mode, choose overkill and select an additional weapon to help defend at close quarters, such as the AL-47 or P90. The third perk can be steady aim or extreme conditioning for mobile snipers, while long distance shooters should use iron lungs or deep impact.

    Location

    • The long-distance sniper must always look for a position that provides as much cover for his body as possible. When shooting from a fixed location, position a few claymores around it to prevent an enemy from sneaking up. The sniper should be placed so he can shoot with just his head exposed whenever possible. For mobile snipers, make use of smoke grenades to help cover movements from location to location. Only look down the scope when stationary and keep an eye on the mini-map for any nearby enemies.

    Strategy

    • A sniper should always be working to assist in the team's objectives. A sniper off alone picking off stray players does little good, if the enemy is able to capture control points. On objective-based games, the sniper should be positioned overlooking either a friendly or enemy objective to provide support for the team. Always prioritize shots when presented with multiple targets. Players posing a direct threat to the sniper should be eliminated first. Enemy snipers and players facing the sniper should be taken out first.
