Even though toenail fungus brings up all sorts of awful images, it is a serious condition that should be treated quickly. But, this is a condition affecting millions of people in the world. If you ever get any type of fungus growth on your body, then you really have to see your health care provider or treat it with OTC drugs. Neglecting to treat toenail fungus will result in a lot more issues including losing your toenails. This kind of fungus is typically seen in toenails, but you could surely get it under your fingernails, too. However the fungus commonly develops in toenails just because the fungus prefers dark and relatively moist environments. Toenail fungus also should be treated because it is infectious not only to other people but can spread in your body.

One of the basic symptoms of toenail fungus is a slight discoloration of the nail. It may appear to be yellowish or white in color, and people oftentimes think they simply have dirt under their toenails. An obvious giveaway with it, however, is those spots cannot be scrubbed clean. That inability to clean the infected nail is something you should remember. Truly, regardless of how hard you try, you are not going to be able to bring back the normal appearance of the nail. A lot of us know what a smashed nail looks like, it tturns dark or black; that is what the toenail fungal infection will develop into. You can promptly treat this fungus with a medication that's available at the pharmacy, or possibly have your health care provider treat the fungus.

You are going to quickly find yourself having more issues to deal with if you don't have the toenail fungus treated. There is variation, but the nail itself is going to grow weaker and even seem to get thin. On the other hand, you will also find some who develop thicker toenails because of the infection. Other signs of more serious problems include flaking, cracked, and damaged toenails. Of course eventually the whole nail will most likely fall off, which is extremely unwanted for anyone. All the while, as the result of the presence and growth of fungus, you will sense an unpleasant odor.

Other symptoms include pain which may be a genuine problem with toenails and putting on shoes. What makes it hard to see immediately is the fact that the fungus begins to accumulate and grow under the nail. What happens is the fungus begins metabolizing the toenail because it is consuming the keratin protein contained in the toenaail. Bear in mind that the fungus prefers damp and dark environments to develop well. Some of the more common causes of toenail fungus can be poor nail hygiene or even always wearing shoes that are too tight. The best growth conditions can occur due to a skin pH that is outside of what is considered average.

The most effective way to discourage the development of this fungus is by simple good hygiene. Since toenail fungus is a contractable condition, you need to be careful in places such as public saunas and steam rooms at fitness facilities and similar places. But you can easily and quickly take medication orally or apply it directly to the affected toenail.
