Abdominoplasty: What Should You Opt For Complete Or Partial?

There are two kinds of abdominoplasty procedures which are commonly done by surgeons. These are the full or complete and the partial kind. The aim of this kind of surgery is to reduce or remove the bulkiness of the abdomen in order to produce an aesthetically pleasing look. In most cases, maintenance of the end result is necessary to prevent the fat from accumulating once again in the area.

Partial Tummy Tuck: The partial tummy tuck basically deals with the part of the abdomen below the navel. This means that there may not be as much fatty residue as necessary for a total procedure. Depending on how much fat is to be removed, the procedure may actually be combined with liposuction to help reduce the amount of tissues in the area.

The incision is usually made a few inches below the navel which means that repositioning of the belly button is not necessary. The abdominal muscles are initially tightened after the fat is removed and then the skin is tightened as well. There is a need for anesthesia for this type of operation but recovery time is usually short and the patient may be discharged several hours after this form of abdominoplasty. This procedure is ideal for individuals who have just enough of a paunch in the abdomen to be worried about but not easily reduced with diet and exercise.

Complete Tummy Tuck: This form of abdominoplasty is more extensive than the partial one. There are basically two cuts made and the first one starts from the one end of the groin to the other. The other incision is to separate the navel from the skin and muscles. The muscle sand tissues in the abdomen are then stitched together for a firmer and less bulging appearance. If fat is present, liposuction may be necessary or the fat is manually separated from the area. When all the tightening is finished, the skin is stretched back in place and a hole for a new navel is made. Depending on how extensive the surgery may be recovery time may require an overnight stay at the hospital for monitoring purposes. Ideal candidates are those who may have tried losing weight but are unsuccessful or those who have lost weight too suddenly from obesity.

Both tummy tuck approaches have an element of risk which should not be taken for granted. Infections may occur which is why doctors usually prescribe an antibiotic to be taken for several days after the operation.
