What Completely Cleans the Colon?

    Diet

    • The colon naturally cleanses itself under normal circumstances; therefore, it is generally not necessary to use special products or treatments. However, a poor diet sometimes can cause colon problems such as constipation. This is because nutrient deficiencies make it harder for the colon to function.

Before you turn to a cleansing product or procedure, try to include more fiber in your diet and drink more water. This will help the colon form good bowel movements that are easy to pass while staving off dehydration. You can get the extra fiber you need by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables--eating them raw is best.

    Cleansers

    • Try an over-the-counter product designed to promote colon regularity or a gentle laxative. Most cleansers contain chemicals or herbs like peppermint and chamomile that have antibacterial, antiparasitic or antifungal properties and that stimulate bowel movements. Doctors sometimes prescribe these cleansing products for procedures such as colonoscopy.

If you try an herb cleanser, be very careful to watch your level of hydration. Choose a cleanse with vitamins A, E and C, and check with your doctor to make sure that it will not interfere with any medications you are on. Don't use cleansers with magnesium sulfate or bentonite, or that are in tablet form, as these can hinder natural colon processes and are harder to digest.

    Colonic

    • If you have changed your diet, tried a colon cleansing product and still have problems like constipation, then your next step should be to try a colonic, also known as hydrotherapy. In this procedure, a small tube is placed inside the rectum and a machine pumps water slowly into the colon. The water naturally flushes out any compacted fecal matter; no chemicals are used.

    Considerations

    • Most doctors agree that colon cleansing isn't usually needed, although an occasional flush may be beneficial. If you routinely are having issues that require a complete colon flush, then you may want to consult your doctor before you continue with more cleansing. He can examine you or do tests to rule out any diseases or physical abnormalities that may be causing problems for you.

Never take any cleansing product without knowing all the ingredients in it, and make sure that the practitioner who does your colonic practices good hygiene.
