Interesting Ways to Paint on Canvas

    Pouring

    • Pouring is a fast way to cover area. It also has other capacities. Interesting drips can be created. In addition, you can achieve extremely complex patterns by pouring different colors together. To mix colors, lay a painting surface flat. Pour the colors from different directions. Lift the edges of the painting surface, one after the other. The colors will run together. At the borders, complex fluid dynamics will create swirling patterns of color.

    Stamping

    • Stamping is a type of printing. Create your own stamps with soft carving slabs available at art stores. These can be cut with wood-cutting tools. Draw a design; carve away the excess. The soft slabs offer little resistance. Mix your paint color, press the stamp into it, then push the stamp onto the painting surface. You can repeat this technique over and over. Overlap patterns, or create bigger designs using repetitive stamping.

    Swiping

    • Swiping paint creates a gritty look. Use paint right out of the tube. It should be thick and viscous. Scoop the paint up with a palette knife. For large amounts, you may even use cardboard instead of a knife. Swipe the tool across the painting surface. Angle the tool so it leaves paint behind. Keep a bit of pressure applied. For more dynamic effects, use several colors at once. You can even add sand or salt to increase textural effects.

    Ragging

    • Ragging is a lift off technique. Each time you push a rag into pools of wet paint, paint is removed. The folds and creases in the rag imprint an intricate pattern on your painting surface. Bunch the rag up in your hand. Use the same rag, over and over, for softer results: the lift off effect lessens as the rag is saturated. Bunch up the rag anew for a greater effect: a dry rag lifts off more paint.
