Defining The Super Foods in Your Healthy Diet

"You are what you eat". A simple way to characterize people's relationship with food in general. Picture yourself and your diet as a movie based on your favorite childhood comic. Some of the foods we eat are Superman rushing in to save the day, while others are Lex Luthor ready to ruin us at every turn. Knowing the types of food that are beneficial to your diet (hero) and the ones that wreck it (villain) could make all the difference in your healthy eating regimen.

Super Foods Save the Day

Full of essential vitamins and minerals, super foods have the capability to taste just as good as their unhealthy counterpart, without feeling guilty afterwards. Weight burning isn't the only benefit of having these super foods. Studies have shown that eating more of this kind of food can help increase your metabolism, lower bad cholesterol, and even prevent the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Not always pronounced to the naked eye, super foods come in different forms. To illustrate, a rather simple Avocado can be put into use as a substitute for meat on a sandwich, or a perfect garnish on a nutrient rich salad. Avocados contain fat that is good for the body and it also happens to be rich and tasteful.

Dark, leafy greens such as spinach and kale are also super foods. Next time you eat out, try adding some chicken on your salad to give it a boost of some much needed protein to help build lean, fat burning muscle mass. Skip the beer/soda for refreshments. Instead, try substituting in a nice pot of green tea which is full of natural occurring antioxidants.

Flaxseed, another super food, can help boost cell metabolism. Try adding some of this powerful super food on your breakfast to get some much needed boost of energy.

Other examples of super foods are:

Blueberries
Walnuts
Broccoli
Organic yogurt
Sweet potato

Toxic Foods That Do Us Harm

Foods that can harm our health and make our bellies stick out are, regrettably, easy to find in any grocery store or mini-mart. Among the primary villains are diet sodas, which tend to have artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and saccharin. These harmful additives can alter brain neurochemistry and research have proven that they promote obesity.

Another additive that we should stay away from whenever possible is high-fructose corn syrup. It has been related closely to obesity, brain damage, and low IQ. It can be frequently found in common every day products like granola bars and salad dressings, all the way to candy and soda. Always keep an eye on products with high amounts of this additive.

Trans fat, or hydrogenated vegetable oils, should also be steered clear of. Thought by many to be the most harmful type of fat, they increase one's bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol.

Other toxic foods include:

White bread, pasta and other refined flour foods
Macaroni and cheese from a box
Processed table salt
Deep fried potato chips
Flavored Soda

Regardless whether it is in real life or in comic books, it helps to know the difference between the good and the bad. This also is applicable to all aspects of everyday life, including making healthy and smart food choices that will help you attain your weight loss goals and live a healthy lifestyle.
