How to Make a Sand Mold

    • 1). Fill a large baking pan or wooden box with casting sand, which you can obtain at a craft store. Let the size of the object you plan to sand cast dictate the size of the container you choose. You can also work outside in temperate weather, creating a large sand pile in your yard and casting directly in the yard.

    • 2). Add a few tbsp. water at a time to moisten the sand, working the water into the sand with your hands. The sand should stick together without cracking when you make a ball, without sticking to your hands. Sand that is too wet will dry out with time, or you can add additional sand to hasten the process.

    • 3). Level out the sand with a spade once you've moistened it to the correct level.

Take the object you intend to cast and place it in the container of sand. Press the object into the sand to create an indentation. The harder you press, the more firmly the object will embed itself in the sand. Use natural objects like shells or leaves, or household objects like bowls.

Pull the object out of the sand once you've made the impression. Sand molds are negative molds, so once you've created the impression of the object you intend to mold, you can remove the object.

    • 6). Fill the sand mold with the appropriate material--molten wax, cement or metal--to complete the mold. Allow the material to harden or cool, then remove it following the appropriate procedures for your type of mold.
