If you're torn between exploring the great natural attractions of the USA and visiting some of its cosmopolitan cities for your next America holidays, why not just avoid making the choice and do both? There are a number of places in this fascinating country where it is possible to arrange that sort of break, but few are better than California tours that involve Los Angeles to Grand Canyon trips.
Such an itinerary will allow you to experience the attractions of the most fashionable city in the USA and the country's most spectacular natural phenomenon, as well as a number of other local highlights.
You will begin and end your holiday in Los Angeles, which is a real paradise for film lovers.
You can arrange a tour around Universal Studios Hollywood or just indulge in a little sightseeing and visit attractions like Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame.
Alternatively, you could spend your time in the City of Angels relaxing on the beach before heading out to some of its famously cool bars and clubs.
An evening on Sunset Strip will allow you to visit some legendary venues and perhaps enjoy a little celebrity spotting.
The noise and glitz of Sunset Strip could hardly be further removed from what awaits you when you arrive at the Grand Canyon.
It is difficult to imagine a more imposing landscape than the one you will see in this national park in Arizona - or one that is better suited to adventure holidays.
For several million years the Colorado River has been carving a course through the rugged terrain of Arizona and the result is a vast scar on the landscape that is now 277 miles long, and a mile deep and 18 miles wide in places.
Dotted around the spectacular canyon are unusual rock formations, caverns and beautiful waterfalls, meaning there are stunning things to see wherever you look.
You will find there are a host of great ways to enjoy the landscape, including hiking expeditions, camping trips, rafting down the Colorado River and horseback riding.
Some of the pursuits - notably river rafting and walking through the canyon itself - require quite a bit of preparation and you will need to consult park authorities before you begin to ensure your plans are safe.
If you only intend to spend a day or two in the area, you will find there are a couple of excellent ways to experience the Grand Canyon.
Book a light aircraft tour and you can expect to enjoy some spectacular views over the whole canyon, before embarking on some low altitude swoops that will present you with a close-up look at some of the more unusual features.
You are also sure to want to take a hiking trip along the South Rim Trail - a route that many people believe gives visitors the best views over the canyon.
If you time your trip at the beginning or end of the day, you will also enjoy a perfect view of one of the stunning sunrises and sunsets the area is renowned for.
The journey between Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon is anything but dead travelling time in your holiday, as there is plenty to see and do whichever route you use.
On the way out of LA you can travel through the Mojave Desert until you reach the tranquil surroundings of Lake Havasu.
This huge reservoir has the feel of a desert oasis and you can experience just how refreshing it is by diving in for a swim.
You will also be able to see a reminder of home while in Lake Havasu City on the shores of the reservoir, as it is where you will find the original London Bridge.
US businessman Robert P McCulloch bought the bridge in 1967 and had it reconstructed in Arizona in an attempt to put the city he had founded on the map.
Head back to Los Angeles on Route 66 and you will have the perfect excuse to enjoy a night out in Las Vegas.
The contrast between the Grand Canyon and Sin City could hardly be more marked, but that's no reason not to spend a few hours enjoying the luxurious casinos, lavish shows and the gaudy man-made attractions.
