    Bulb Ornament

    • Kids can make ornaments to remind them of all their exceptional qualities. First, have kids cut words out of a book or magazine that describe them. If a child has trouble identifying words to describe himself, encourage him to think of words that his friends and family might use to describe him. Place these tiny strips of paper inside a clear, plastic bulb ornament. Tie a ribbon through the top of the bulb to hang from a hook or nail on the wall.

    "I Can" Container

    • You can recycle an old coffee can or tub and turn it into an “I Can” container. Cover the can in construction paper and then decorate it. Draw or paint designs on the can, glue beads or sequins and sprinkle glitter on it for added sparkle. Use the can to collect notes about the child’s accomplishments. For instance, if she gets an “A” on a paper or test, have her write this down and place it in the can. Whenever she is feeling down, she can empty the can and read about all of her accomplishments.

    Hand Prints

    • You can create a child's hand print by tracing around the hand on a large piece of paper or poster board. On each finger of each hand, have the child write down a favorite characteristic or quality. Encourage the child to think diversely about his talents, skills and attributes. For instance, include personality traits, sports skills and academic skills. After labeling each finger, decorate the rest of the poster, if desired.

    Collage

    • Children can make collages that reflect their interests and talents. Cut pictures from catalogs and magazines that symbolize or reinforce the person’s skills, experiences or abilities. For instance, cut a picture of a basketball to symbolize the person’s membership on a team. Cut a picture of books to symbolize the person’s passion for literature. Assemble the cut pictures on a piece of construction paper.
