How to Lock Down a Hitch Coupler
- 1). Rotate the trailer tongue jack handle in a clockwise direction to raise the trailer tongue so that it is slightly higher than the top of the hitch ball on your tow vehicle.
- 2). Back your tow vehicle up so that the hitch ball is directly under the hitch coupler.
- 3). Release the coupler locking device on the top of the trailer tongue by simultaneously lifting up on the coupler locking handle while sliding it rearward toward the front of the trailer.
- 4). Lower the trailer tongue onto the hitch ball by turning the tongue jack handle in a counterclockwise direction until the jack is fully retracted.
- 5). Visually inspect underneath the hitch coupler to make sure it is around the base of the ball and not sitting on top of the ball. Raise the tongue with the tongue jack if the hitch coupler is not in the proper location.
- 6). Jiggle the coupler locking handle and make sure it is in a full rearward position. Lower the trailer tongue back onto the hitch ball and re-inspect the hitch coupler.
- 7). Push the coupler locking handle forward and over the front of the trailer tongue until it locks into place. Insert a cotter pin or a small padlock into the hole in the locking handle to make sure it does not work loose while underway.
- 8). Raise the front of the trailer to test the hitch coupler connection by cranking the tongue jack down in a clockwise direction until the rear of your tow vehicle starts to raise. Be aware that if your trailer tongue can raise the rear of your tow vehicle, you have a good connection. Raise the tongue jack to a fully retracted position by cranking the handle in a counterclockwise direction.
