When I mean killer, I am not referring to a murdering psychopath but heart disease.
Heart disease is responsible for more deaths in America than any other disease with nearly 1 out of every four having some form of the condition.
The good news is that heart disease in many cases can be avoided.
It is also treatable if you unfortunately have the condition.
Extensive research has been conducted that has revealed that you can take certain measures to reduce your risk of the disease and also improve the condition if you have it.
Many of the causes can be linked with the lifestyle that many people are leading.
People are taking less exercise as many people no longer work in physically demanding jobs.
People are also eating less healthy diets than they use to do.
Many diets include a lot of processed foods which are high in saturated fat, sugar and salt.
However, you can reduce the risk of the disease as these facts show: Fact One Someone who takes regular exercise each week can reduce their risk of getting heart disease by up to 50 %.
Fact Two Smoking is dangerous to your health.
If you cut out smoking you can lower your risk levels to the same level of a non smoker within 5 years of quitting.
Fact Three Obesity and being overweight increase your risk.
Therefore, if people reduce their body weight by only 5 to 10 % they can greatly reduce their risk.
Fact Four Eating a diet that is low in saturated fats will lower your blood cholesterol levels which will reduce your risk of the disease.
Fact Five Although, it is still America's biggest killer, the rate of deaths related to heart disease is falling.
In the last 15 years rates have dropped approximately 20 %.
This drop is attributed to people living healthier lifestyles.
If you find that you are eating too much of an unhealthy diet and are not exercising enough them make a start to change.
This does not have to be a massive change.
It is just a matter of reducing your intake of saturated fats and replacing it with more fresh fruit and vegetables and taking more regular exercise.
