Introduction After being a victim of bad press for nearly four decades owing to the issues of the Dalkon Shield device, IUD's (intrauterine device) are making their comeback and are now welcomed by over 8% of American women, and this number is likely to skyrocket in the next few years.
Most of this surge of appeal is a result of Bayer's second generation FDA approved contraceptives introduced in 2009 also known as "Mirena" and ParaGard intrauterine devices.
There are a few subtle differences between the two IUD contraceptive devices including effects on menstruation cycles, but both are the safest and most effective forms of long term birth control.
How long after getting an IUD can I have sex? It's probably the most fundamental question facing any woman looking to insert an IUD, and the short answer is "Immediately".
Regardless of the type IUD device you choose, you can have intercourse as soon as you desire.
However, IUD devices are most effective when inserted within a week of starting a period, and it is best to allow the device acclimate to your body for the first seven days after insertion, and hence take extra precautionary measures during that time should you wish to have intercourse.
This small plastic T shaped device is discreetly placed deep within the uterus and not the vaginal canal, making the chances of detection by you or your partner slim to none.
There may however be instances where the string of the device is too long and may slip through, but this is an easy fix by a qualified medical practitioner.
How long does IUD last and is it for everyone? One of the notable features of IUD's is that they can last up to 7 years for the Mirena and 12 for ParaGard.
Furthermore, there are no minimum time constraints for how long the IUD device must stay inserted, and can be removed or replaced without any fusses at your local clinic.
It is however important to note that the effects of the IUD nullify as soon as the device is removed.
So if you plan of having intercourse but don't want to get pregnant, it is best to seek an alternative and use it even before removing the IUD.
The common misconception revolving around IUD's is that they are designed for older women or those with kids, but this is baseless.
Some medical providers claim that IUD's may cause infertility and or infections when inserted in young women, but this doesn't imply to the two new models available in the market today.
Word of Caution Take note that these devices should not stay inserted for more than the prescribed time, and you and your partner should be checked for STI's (Sexual Transmitted Infections) if you choose to indulge in casual sex with different partners.
It is also a good idea to feel the string of the IUD periodically to ensure it is still in the right place.
If you do notice any unusual activity such as discharge or bleeding, seek medical assistance immediately.
The IUD is the hallmark of modern contraception, and provides a no-fuss, highly effective and safe experience.
