Native American Ways to Teach Kids
- Integrate your Native American studies in your science class by discovering the planting and harvesting techniques used by Native Americans. You can include the study of different plants and the importance of nutrition. You can also incorporate the study of the different seasons and the importance Native Americans place on environmental conservation. A project to include in your science class would be to make a Native American flute out of wood.
- Art is the area where you can really get your students interested in the Native American culture. There are many art projects you can do, such as making a dreamcatcher, a totem pole or a birdhouse. You can also draw examples of different types of housing or study a Pueblo building. Have your students make their own dye and create a class murals using Native American symbols.
- Reading biographies of Native American legends will give your students a better understanding of their culture. You can also include Native American folklore, myths and poetry in your studies. Have your students write their own poem or a report on various Native American tribes.
- Integrate the study of Native Americans in math class by studying the geometric shapes used in the art from that culture. You can also have your students write Lakota Sioux words by solving a number sentence (see Resources). You can also play the Native American game Picaria, which teaches critical and logical thinking.
- Blend Native American studies into your social studies curriculum by studying the different regions in the U.S. where Native Americans lived. You can also explore the economic and trade system Native Americans used with early European settlers, and have students study the different clothing, housing and jobs of Native Americans.
