Plain canned or bottled juices can be transformed into an intoxicating punch in just two or three days by applying home wine making methods. You will probably not need to purchase anything else because the tools needed are common household odds and ends. This is the most economical way to prepare for a party. With just a few cans of juice, the lively punch can go around with more than enough for everyone.

What you will need for home wine making

Look around the house for a glass or plastic receptacle several gallons in capacity. That will be your demijohn or fermenting vessel. If you can get something that is glass, so much the better. However if you have a sturdy plastic container it may also be usable provided that it is food grade plastic.

Telling whether the plastic container is usable for home wine making is as easy as locating the resin identification number of the plastic. Although this is not found on all plastic products, if it does occur, it should resemble a triangle made up of three bent arrows. The resin code is the number inside the arrows. Number 2 means that your plastic is food grade and is safe to use.

HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) is practically the only kind of plastic you should consider for home wine making. It has no odor and does not chemically interact easily.

Additionally drinking water that hasn't been distilled will be used for home wine making. Plain water has substances that yeast need to survive during fermentation and these are lost through distillation.

Of course you need to have your grape juice, preferably the style which is packaged in jars or jugs and sold in the refrigerated section. If you are not using the grape juice immediately, place it in the coldest part of the fridge, or in the freezer. This is to prevent the action of bacteria on the sugar. Remember you will need that sugar for the alcohol in the wine.

You will also want a pack of wine yeast, a package of sugar, a measuring spoon, one or two balloons and thick rubber bands for home wine making.

The procedure for fast home wine making

Thaw your fruit juice. Then, using a funnel, transfer it into the fermenting vessel. Measure out 2/3 of the sugar recommended in its label and mix it in. Shake the container until the sugar is dissolved. Let the container stand while you prepare the yeast.

Start the yeast fermenting by simmering it in some water. When it resembles thin meal, it is hydrated and ready to be poured into the mixture. Use teaspoon of yeast for every 12 ounces of juice.

Once the yeast is done, immerse the cooking vessel in some tap water. This cools the yeast down so that you can mix it into the fermenting container.

Pull down one balloon over the mouth of the fermenting vessel until its tip is flat. Secure the sides using your rubber bands. Using a pin, perforate a few holes into the balloon to allow the gas, resulting from fermentation, out.

Wait some minutes to see if fermentation is taking place. If it is, the top of the balloon should expand. After a day or two, the balloon will fall back in place and you have completed your home wine making project.

Extract the wine from the vessel of fermentation, using a rubber hose, into another container. You can age it further into wine or drink the punch immidiatly.
