Cast Protector
Breaking an arm or a leg is more then just painful, it's an inconvenience to the nth degree. Not only is it a physical impairment, making it difficult to do the things that you're normally used to doing on your own, but it's also one more thing you need to be aware of in your day to day activities. While a cast is meant to protect your broken bone and keep it stable while you heal, what's there to protect your cast from damage due to banging it, or getting it wet? It used to be a cast protector was a plastic bag and some tape; thankfully technology has come a long way.
Generally casts are made of two substances; plaster of Paris or fiberglass. Fiberglass is meant to be lighter, and stronger, as well as breathable which allows it to dry quickly. This was once touted as a washable cast, so that you would be able take showers or baths, even swim without fear of damaging your cast. However, this didn't stop the skin under the cast from sloughing off and generally becoming a stinky mess.
Seeing a need, somebody developed a cast protector that was actually made out of a waterproof material that slipped over your cast and attached with a secure strap. These cast protectors are available in a variety of sizes and include; cast covers for kids, cast covers for adults, waterproof cast covers, and cast protectors for showers.
They are durable, able to stand up to numerous washings, as well as breathable so that they don't build up moisture inside the protective bag thus defeating the purpose.
While these cast protectors for the most part only protect against water and inadvertent moisture they do provide a limited amount of physical damage protection as they are tear proof and can take a bit of abuse. One of the hardest things to get used to while wearing a cast is the additional weight and bulkiness on your arm or leg. This often causes you to bump into things you normally wouldn't, causing small abrasions or if done consistently, small cracks to form, which violate the integrity of your cast. A cast protector can help alleviate some of this damage, but not all; only due diligence can accomplish that.
If you break your arm or leg the last thing you should be concerned with is protecting your cast. Add one of the cast protectors to your cast and regain some of the freedom you lost by being able to shower when you want, go outside in the rain if need be, or just to add that peace of mind.
