How to Dig Out Metal in Concrete
- 1). Secure a flat chisel bit into the cullet of your demolition hammer, hammer chipper or hammer drill. Slide the shank of the chisel into the hole in the end of the tool. It will snap into place.
- 2). Set your demolition hammer, hammer chipper or hammer drill to a reciprocating or pulsating motion. This forces the chisel back and forth just like a jack hammer. Turn off the spinning motion if your equipment offers drilling capabilities.
- 3). Place the tip of the chisel at a 45-degree angle to the surface of the concrete approximately 1 inch away from the metal object in the concrete.
- 4). Pull the trigger on the tool and push the chisel downward and towards the metal object to chip away the concrete. Stop once the tool reaches the metal object.
- 5). Rotate to the other side of the metal object and repeat the process. Do this until you remove the concrete from all four sides.
- 6). Go back to the original side where you first removed material. Remove additional material until you reach the bottom of the metal object. Move to the other side and repeat the process. Do this until you remove the concrete from all four sides.
- 7). Pull the metal up and out of the hole.
