- 1). Insert a putty knife underneath the Formica countertop. Wedge the knife in and wiggle it around until the countertop begins to separate from the wooden counter. Kitchen-counter-tops.net recommends pouring lacquer into the crack you created to help loosen the Formica. Switch to a crowbar when the countertop loosens enough to slide the crowbar underneath. Pry the rest of the countertop loose.
- 2). Scrape away the remaining adhesive with your putty knife or a paint scraper.
- 3). Wipe down the surface with a rag and warm water. Sand the counters until smooth, and clean the surface a second time to remove dust and dirt. Repair or replace the plywood if necessary.
- 4). Measure the counters and purchase new Formica countertop. Give the measurements to the store so they can cut the pieces for you. Apply contact cement, or the store's recommended adhesive for the countertop, onto the underside of the Formica laminate and onto the top surface of the counters. Kitchen-counter-tops.net recommends contact cement over epoxy glue due to its durability.
- 5). Place the Formica laminate onto the counter after the contact cement dries, not while it's still wet. Position it and press down firmly. Apply clamps around the countertop and leave it to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
