How to Build a Patio Waterfall

    • 1). Place the pond liner on your patio in the desired location of the waterfall. Put concrete blocks inside the pond liner next to the walls. The concrete blocks provide a base for the stacked stones and will reduce the amount of slate that you need to elevate the waterfall.

    • 2). Line the concrete blocks side by side for the desired width of the waterfall. Stack them two or three high, depending on the depth of your pond liner, with waterproof adhesive between each block. The concrete blocks should not rise above the rim of the pond liner.

    • 3). Cover the front-facing section of the concrete blocks with slate stones placed flat, vertically against the blocks. Attach the slate to the concrete with waterproof adhesive.

    • 4). Stack your first layer of slate stones on top of the concrete blocks. Apply adhesive to the concrete, then press the largest slate stones that you have into the adhesive. Try to fit the slate together as closely as possible along the front edge of the concrete. You will be stacking the slate in tiers, so any visible concrete between the stones in the center and at the back will disappear as you stack the slate.

    • 5). Put your second row of slate stones 6 to 8 inches back from the front edge of the first layer. Stack the slate from this point to the back of the concrete blocks. Apply adhesive to the slate and then press the second row into the adhesive. Stack two to three layers of slate to create your second row.

    • 6). Apply the third row of slate stones 6 to 8 inches back from the edge of the second layer. Stack the slate from this point to the back of the concrete blocks. Apply adhesive onto the slate stones and press the new layers into the adhesive.

    • 7). Make a fourth row of slate as the top of your waterfall, if you have room. If not, three tiered rows of slate will work nicely.

    • 8). Stack slate around the outside perimeter of the pond liner. Place the stones as high as needed to make the pond liner disappear. The top stone should cover the rim of the pond liner. Remember to add waterproof adhesive between the stones.

    • 9). Run a length of plastic tubing from the top of the slate waterfall to the bottom of the pond liner. Feed the tube behind and between the stones so that it is as unobtrusive as possible. Attach it to the stones with duct tape as needed.

Attach the end of the plastic tubing in the pond liner to the water spout on the waterfall pump. Secure the pump to a brick with a rubber band and place it in the pond liner. Fill the pond with water and turn on the waterfall pump.
