    Door Frames

    • If your cabinets are stained, it is best to use a wood filler that is stainable. Wood fillers come in different shades, can be mixed to create more shades and do not shrink. You can also stain over wood fillers so that they will match the color of your cabinets. Caulk will shrink some when it dries, it is difficult to get it exactly level with the door frame and it is not stainable. If you are going to use caulk, it will be less noticable if your cabinets are painted.

    Cabinet Door Panel

    • A large gap around the door panel is better suited for caulk than it is for wood fillers simply due to the ease of using caulk in a larger area. You can use an acrylic latex caulk on painted cabinets. Fill the gap with caulk, and use a putty knife to level it. Wipe off excess caulk with a damp rag. After the caulk has dried, check for shrinkage and refill low areas as needed; allow to dry, and then paint. You will need a color caulk if your cabinets are stained.

    Color Caulk

    • There are color caulks that are specifically designed for wood. These caulks are used most often on wood floors, but they would work on stained cabinets. You can choose from several colors of color caulk at home-remodeling centers that sell hardwood flooring. Find a color that comes the closest to matching your cabinets.
