Risks of UV Light

    Skin Exposure

    • Exposing skin to UV light is as easy as going outside for the day. Wearing clothing and sunscreen can help reduce the amount of UV light absorbed by the skin. Small bursts of exposure can cause sunburns, while repeat exposure over a lifetime may eventually cause skin cancers such as melanoma. People of all skin tones need to be wary of sun exposure, not just those with a fair complexion.

    Eye Exposure

    • Your eyes are exposed to UV light in several different ways. Outdoor sunlight, UV light boxes, UV lamps and mercury florescent bulbs that are missing an envelope are all potential sources of exposure. That exposure can affect the cornea as it does the skin since both are made from epithelial cells. A burning sensation can occur just like a sunburn. Exposure can lead to a more serious condition such as cataracts -- when the lens is affected. Cataracts can cause blindness. Sunglasses able to filter UV light are recommended for everyday use. Industries that use UV light, such as laboratories, should have protection devices in place for their employees that are appropriate for the UV wavelength being used.

    Immune System

    • Scientists have found a link between UV light exposure and suppression of the immune system. The immune system is a way our body protects us from disease-causing pathogens. Excess sun exposure can lead to a decreased skin integrity, which can allow pathogens to enter the body, and a decrease in the immune response in general.

    Premature Aging

    • Another risk of UV light exposure is a premature aging of the skin. As we age, skin may become thick, leathery and wrinkled. While many people think this is just an unavoidable outcome of the aging process, about 90 percent of visible skin changes can be attributed to sun exposure. Limiting your amount of sun exposure can decrease the likelihood of premature skin aging.
