2010 Formula One Season Preview – The Four Champions Ride
The 2010 Formula One Season is just around the corner. It is a unique season. With the return of the all time winning world champion, Michael Schumacher, the field will boast four champions which should make for great racing. This is particularly true since two are on the same team. Let's take a look.
One has to show off showing a bit of respect to the current world champion. Yes, I am talking about Jenson Button who shocked pretty much everyone by claiming the championship in 2009 while with Brawn GP. Despite his win, it didn't look like Brawn made much of an effort to retain him and he quickly made the switch to McLaren, which is an odd decision given a driver who is already there – Lewis Hamilton. Most pundits view this as a bad move and, of the world champions on the grid, Button is given the least chance of having a good season.
Lewis Hamilton is our second driver and mans the number one position at McLaren regardless of how the team tries to deny this. The 2010 should be an interesting one as Lewis has shown he doesn't play well with other drivers who are near his level as the fiasco with Fernando Alonso revealed a few years ago. The polarizing Ron Dennis is gone, so perhaps things in the team have changed. Mercedes obviously did not think much of the future prospects as shown by its switch over to Brawn GP. This will be a very interesting season in the McLaren camp. It could go very well, but one can't help but feel like it is going to turn into a huge soap opera.
Fernando Alonso is our third champion. After years of speculation, the Spaniard is now with Ferrari. It is a match that always seemed made in heaven, but both he and the team have much to prove. Ferrari was down in 2009 – way down. Alonso barely skirted the crashgate fiasco that took down Nelson Piquet, Renault and his manager. This is also the year when Ferrari really becomes divorced from the Schumacher years. Many will be watching closely to see if the team fades badly or picks up its game. Early indications are the car and driver are good, but preseason testing is always difficult to evaluate.
And then we come to the Return of the King. After three years in retirement, Michael Schumacher is back. He won't be driving the red Ferrari, however. No, he has jumped down the pit lane to the Brawn team, where he can find his old partner in crime Ross Brawn. The team is now known as Mercedes given that manufacturers decision to bailout on scandal ridden McLaren and invest in its own team.
Does the king still have it? Will Lewis and Jenson sabotage each others seasons? Will Fernando and Ferrari rise from the ashes to claim the championship? They are fascinating questions, but most guess they are irrelevant. Why? It looks like this is the year of the energy drink. Yes, I am picking Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull to take the championships. The king is dead. Long live the new German king!
