    Remove the Existing Door

    • You and your helper must understand what you will be doing and how it will be accomplished. It is essential that you release the tension springs on the door in the proper way so that you can remove the mechanism safely. After you raise the door you'll need to lock it in place. C-clamps or locking pliers will work for this purpose.

Whatever mechanism you use, make sure that the devices are extra tight. Work carefully as you detach the cable and the springs on each side of the door and the door's spring mechanism. Before you can remove the panels, place a concrete block or 4-inch by 4-inch wood block underneath each end for the door to rest. When you remove the locking mechanism and lower the door, make sure that you are properly positioned to handle the weight of the door.

    New Door Assembly

    • Familiarizing yourself with the door components and how they fit together will make the assembly process go smoother. The door tracks will have to be fastened to door jambs, so make sure that the jambs are in good overall condition. Door stops must be installed on the jambs to keep the panels in place on the exterior side. In case you have to adjust the stops, secure the nails partway.

Follow the manufacturer instructions for assembling the door and tracks. The bottom panel should be snug against the stops on both sides and level. Get the first panel right because it will determine the fit of subsequent panels. Most people insert nails and bend them toward the panels to hold the panels tight. Usually, inserting wood shims behind the jambs will help get a good fit.

Once the vertical tracks are mounted over the rollers and the rollers are in the hinges, you can drill the holes for the lag screws and fasten the brackets to the jambs. Hanging a rope from the ceiling and tying it around the horizontal track is a good method for holding the piece in place as you connect it to the vertical component. The tracks must be aligned and secured before you can install the spring hardware and spring mechanism.

    Door Opener

    • The method of installation for the openers depends on the product. The most important part of the garage door opener is the header bracket, which is installed in the framing of the garage above the door. The bracket supports the stress caused on the opener's rail by the opening and closing of the door. If the garage ceiling is finished, you'll probably need to install a support bracket.

Also, wood blocks or brackets may also be needed to support the sensors. Doors that exceed 7 feet in height may require an extension rail kit. Make sure that gap floor between the floor and the door is ¼ inch or less so that the safety device can function properly.
