Other conventional way of surgical operation is the use of laser to cut tissues. The utilization of a laser scalpel is another way of surgical operation as a good example, and soft tissue laser surgery, in which the laser beam vaporizes soft tissue with high water content. Laser resurfacing is a type of surgery in which molecular links are broke up using a laser.

Laser surgical procedure is frequently used on the eye. Operations used include LASIK, which is exercised to correct near- and far-sightedness in vision, and photorefractive keratectomy, a procedure which permanently reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser to remove a small amount of tissue.

Green laser surgical treatment is utilized for the treatment/reduction of enlarged prostates. The laser is very superficial. It would not really take time in recovering from this type of surgery.

Laser scalpel

A laser beam is a scalpel in most laser surgeries, cutting or melting living biological tissue with the use of laser light. In soft tissue laser operation, a laser beam ablates or vaporizes the soft tissue with high water content.

In ophthalmology excimer lasers are used for transforming the form of the cornea, surgeries known as LASIK and LASEK.

Other surgical fields where the use of a laser scalpel which is common are circumcision, neurosurgery and vascular surgery. Today YAG and CO2 lasers are used, but potential benefits of utilizing much costly electron lasers are being studied.

In studying cells in living creatures, special laser micro-scalpels can make cuts smaller than a single cell.

LASIK surgery

A type of refractive procedure for reorienting myopia asdf hyperopia asdf astigmatism is called LASIK. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists using a laser. Photorefractive keratectomy and PRK are similar with LASIK surgery in which the recovery of a patient is much faster. Both LASIK and PRK represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and are thus viable alternatives to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.

The LASIK technique was made possible by the Colombia-based Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who, around 1950 in his clinic in Bogot, Colombia, developed the first microkeratome, and developed the technique used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure he called keratomileusis. Barraquer also researched the question of how much of the cornea had to be left unaltered to provide stable long-term results.

Later technical and procedural developments included RK, developed in Russia in the 1970s by Svyatoslav Fyodorov, and PRK , developed in 1983 at Columbia University by Dr. Steven Trokel, who in addition published an article in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in 1983 outlining the potential benefits of using the Excimer laser patented in 1973 by Mani Lal Bhaumik in refractive surgeries.

In 1968 at the Northrop Corporation Research and Technology Center of the University of California, Mani Lal Bhaumik and a group of scientists were working on the development of a carbon-dioxide laser. Their work evolved into what would become the Excimer laser. This type of laser would become the cornerstone for refractive eye surgery. Dr. Bhaumik announced his team's breakthrough in May 1973 at a meeting of the Denver Optical Society of America in Denver, Colorado. He would later patent his discovery.
