Art is something that gives identity to a country or any specific geographical area's culture.
And, like most elements of a culture, it is also something that is characterized by constant change and continues to evolve with the passage of time.
Dancing is a visually appealing form of art and is also one of the most popular.
Like all other similar art forms, it has undergone many changes through the years.
There was a time when the sight of graceful dancers was only relished by a selected number of people hailing from the upper echelon of society.
Gradually, however, dancing became democratized and began evolving like some of the other art forms.
Various styles of dance were eventually developed outside of the more conventional dance studio, and these styles were shared by many different people who are bound by their love for music and the art of dancing.
These dancing styles, developed in urban as well as suburban spaces and eventually performed in many open spaces, such as in parties, streets, parks, and school yards, eventually became collectively known as street dance, which, in stark contrast to some of the earlier dance forms, can actually be witnessed and performed by almost everyone.
Street dancing is also otherwise known as vernacular dance, and it is actually deemed as a modern-day descendant of the folk dance as well as the traditional jazz dance, with the exception of the fact that it had undergone several changes with the passage of time.
The addition of the word 'street' in the term street dance is actually because of the fact that most regions of the world have now been urbanized and modernized.
Most of the street dancing styles have been developed by a specific group of people living in a specific area, such as the B-boying dancing style, which later became known as break dancing, which was originally developed in New York City, the Electro Dance, which was conceived in Paris, France, and the Melbourne Shuffle, which originated from Melbourne in Australia.
But with the help of the internet, these dancing styles were eventually disseminated across many countries, and people who enjoy listening to the same genre of music performed these dancing styles in open spaces as well.
Most of the dancing styles that can be classified as street dancing are oftentimes improvisational, while performers of these dancing styles likewise encourage the participation of other people, some even going as far as to interact and initiate contact with them.
These dancing styles of the new-fangled branch of dancing called street dance only proves that dancing, like all the other art forms, is still evolving and undergoing change.
