How to Install a Ceiling

    • 1). Find the joist in the ceiling with the stud finder. Mark where the joists are at on both sides. Using the tape measure, measure a 4-by-8 area, which is the size of a piece of drywall.

    • 2). Put up the first piece of drywall starting in the corner of the room, using drywall screws and the drill. Put up the second one and offset it so you don't have one straight seam. Repeat hanging whole sheets of drywall until you can't hang any more whole sheets. Measure where there is no drywall with the tape measure. Mark a sheet of drywall using the measurements from the ceiling. Use the chalk box to make sure there are straight lines. Cut the drywall with the carpenter's knife. Hang the cut pieces with drywall screws and the drill.

    • 3). Tape the seams with drywall tape. After the seams are all covered, take the trowel and spread a thin coat of joint compound over the drywall tape. Let dry for two to three hours. Sand lightly with the sandpaper. Repeat spreading the joint compound over the seams and sanding lightly two more times. After the ceiling is level and smooth, you are ready to paint or stucco.
