We all know about stress and anxiety; the signs are all well known to us to include nervousness, a rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms and shaking hands among many others. The trouble with stress is that it affects almost every other part of your body and can damage most if not all of your organs; this includes your heart and unknown to many, your hair as well.

There are many people who have never realized that their hair can actually be affected by stress and anxiety. While it may not be very clear ho wit happens, there are many people whose problem of hair loss is accompanied with several other distressing symptoms. If you begin losing your hair and your doctor rules out any known diseases and you are not aging, you may want to consider stress as one of the causes.

One thing you must know however is that hair loss occasioned by stress and anxiety does not affect every other person. There are only some people who get affected and science has not yet pin pointed the reason for this. The other important thing to note is that it will almost always be accompanied by several other symptoms.

Sometimes stress and anxiety can actually lead to graying of hair or whitening. This is likely to be as a result of the body using the hair as a shock absorber and as a result a person begins to age faster than they really are. While anxiety on its won cannot turn your hair grey on its own, it causes alopecia areata, which targets dark hairs, will affect the hairs that are coming out and make them appear grey.

The other interesting thing about hair loss that comes as a result of stress and anxiety is when you realize your hair is graying; you are likely to begin worrying about the hair more. Most people who are already anxious will spend a lot of time and energy worrying about their hair and the natural effect will believe the hair is to grey thereby creating a vicious cycle. Sometimes such people will be convinced they are suffering from hair loss when they are not suffering from any form of it.

The long and short of it is that there might not be any direct treatment for hair loss caused by stress and anxiety. The only cause of action is to stop worrying. Even though some hair you lose will not grow back, dealing with anxiety will solve many other problems you will be dealing with. Hair growth takes a long time and dealing with your source of stress is the first step in the right direction.
