If you have lost a baby with a cot death or miscarried, then you will know the fear and concern about getting pregnant again.
Getting pregnant after a miscarriage is not necessarily different physically from the previous time, yet it is only natural you will be worried and mentally stressed as you try again.
Here are some tips on getting pregnant after a miscarriage, which hopefully will put your mind at rest.
  1. You need to know the reason why you miscarried.
Perhaps you were extremely stressed, were physically unwell or suffered from some physical trauma.
There may have been some abnormality with the fetus.
Please discuss these issues thoroughly with your doctor or midwife first.
  2. It is also essential to talk about your worries and fears with your partner.
He may have his own concerns too.
Both of you need to be ready for another pregnancy, so it is vital that both you and he are emotionally recovered from the miscarriage.
If there were any physical problems which affected you, then you should be over that also.
  3. Try to relax, perhaps attending a relaxation or yoga class might help, and avoid stress.
  4. Do not use a hot tub or take hot baths, as very hot water can increase the risk of miscarriage in early pregnancy.
A warm shower is preferable, or a standard bath with warm water.
  5. Avoid alcohol during the early stages, and be careful with over using caffeine drinks.
Drugs are a serious danger to any unborn child at any stage.
In fact, it is better to avoid alcohol and drugs for at least three months before conception.
  6. Another vital cause of premature baby problems is smoking.
Smoking to relieve tension is highly dangerous to developing babies.
Smoking can bring about a miscarriage, and also affect the baby's weight.
It can even cause the placenta to develop lower in the uterus, produce thinning of the placenta, introduce more carbon into the baby's bloodstream, and cause other harm.
  7. Do you worry about having sex while you are pregnant? When the baby has developed in your womb there is no way that sex can harm your baby.
That amazing cushion of amniotic fluid that surrounds the little bundle within your uterus is the perfect protector.
If your doctor advises you to abstain from sex during the early months, then take that advice.
It means that you are playing safe during your first trimester, but as the fluid develops around your baby, you can fully enjoy sex during the latter half of your pregnancy.
Whatever the reason for your miscarriage, you really must have full ante-natal care.
See your doctor and discuss fully.
He or she may suggest tests or other pointers to help make your next attempt a success.
Then you can look forward to the love and joy your new baby will bring you.
