Easy Sour Cream Frosting
- A basic sour cream frosting is the initial template of all sour cream frostings. It is relatively simple to make and takes a matter of minutes to prepare.
Combine 1/2 cup sour cream, 2/3 cup powdered sugar and 8 oz. cream cheese in a bowl. Mix until blended thoroughly. Spread over a pastry before the mixture hardens. If the mixture does harden, put it over low heat and stir until the mixture softens again. - For a dark twist on the old favorite, melt 1 1/4 lb. of finely chopped milk chocolate and 10 oz. of finely chopped semisweet chocolate in a double boiler. If you do not have a double boiler, substitute a large metal bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Stir occasionally. Once the chocolate is melted, remove the bowl from the heat and whisk in 3 cups of sour cream and 2 tsp. of vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool while stirring until it is spreadable and at room temperature. Spread on the cake or cupcake soon after, before the frosting thickens.
- For a citrus flair, try this orange recipe. Applying optional orange food coloring can give the frosting a vibrant hue.
Combine 16 oz. of cream cheese with 8 tbsp. of unsalted butter using an electric mixer. Beat in 2 cups of powdered sugar, 2 tsp. of orange zest and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract. Finally, add in 1/3 cup of chilled sour cream. Mix and cover. Place the frosting into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before using.
