Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Report the identity theft to the authorities. Filing a police report is the first step in finding the person who stole your identity.
2

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC keeps a nationwide database for all identity theft cases. This allows law enforcement officials in every state access to your case information.
3

Get a copy of all three of your credit reports. Credit reports from Experian, Transunion and Equifax will list any aliases that have been used on credit applications. Often, these credit reports also will list contact information used in conjunction with the aliases.
4

Hire a lawyer. Like law enforcement, lawyers have access to information that you don't. It is also easier for lawyers to work in conjunction with law enforcement to help track down your identity thief.
