How to Wire a 6 Plug for a Trailer
- 1). Run new wiring for the trailer if necessary. Using multi-strand color coded trailer wiring makes the entire job easier and conforms to the industry standard for trailer wiring. Secure the wire to the trailer frame with clips or nylon wire ties.
The wires connect as follows:
White - Trailer frame
Brown- Running lights
Blue- Electric brake
Yellow (or Red) - Left turn
Green- Right turn
Black- 12 volt power (for battery charging or auxiliary lights) - 2
Connect the wires on the tow vehicle to the trailer receptacle as shown in the diagram. Strip back about 1/4 inch of insulation from the wires before inserting them into the proper terminal of the receptacle. Coat all connections with dielectric grease to help prevent corrosion of the wires. - 3). Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from the wires on the trailer and connect to the trailer plug as per the diagram. Clamp the wires in the terminal with the clamping screws, making sure they are fully tightened. All strands of each wire should be inserted in the terminals as any that are left out can cause short circuits. The wires and plug should extend beyond the trailer coupler by at least one foot to allow enough slack for the turning of the trailer.
