How to Donate a Used Bridal Gown

    • 1). Dry clean your gown. Charities will not accept gowns with discoloration, grass stains or tears on the material, so clear up any issues with the gown before attempting to give it away. Additionally, determine your gown's overall condition. Gown re-locators accept wedding gowns purchased within the last 15 years to ensure that the gown still looks contemporary enough to be worn again.

    • 2). Locate a suitable charity. Many wedding dress re-locators, such as Brides Against Breast Cancer, Savvy Cinderella and Compassion Connect specifically cater to matching wedding gowns with financially burdened brides. However, if you want to see that your gown goes to another cause, consider sending it to a charity such as the Mary Madeline Project, which recycles wedding gowns to make funeral garments and bedding for babies. These hard-to-find garments are delivered to hospitals to help make the funeral preparation process a bit easier for grieving parents.

    • 3). Contact your chosen charity and find out where their drop-off points are located. If they do not have a point near you, ask if you can send the gown to them.

    • 4). Package the gown in a breathable, acid-free box and either drop it off with the charity or mail it to them.

    • 5). Ask for an income tax receipt if you wish to claim the donation during the next tax period.
