About Wheelchair Clothing

One of the most important articles of clothing for a wheelchair user is a good, well fitting pair of trousers that have been made to be worn whilst sitting. As wheelchair trousers come in many styles and materials it is easy to buy appropriate upper body garments from high street stores to match. If you use a wheelchair or know somebody who does, then there are many wonderful items which can help to make life a little more comfortable and dressing much easier.

When a wheelchair user is moving or simply sitting dormant - they will tell you how uncomfortable standard trousers are and how irritating it is when the trousers drop down at the back. That is why trousers designed to be worn by wheelchair users are a great deal higher at the back compared to normal trousers. When selecting a pair of wheelchair trousers think about what you will need them for, do you need a smart pair for work or for a formal function? Or perhaps something a little more casual, like jeans, cargo pants or pull on elasticated waist trousers. Also consider the weather when choosing fabrics, a lighter weight of material such as cotton is best for the summer and heavier, warmer cords are more suitable for the winter months.

Try to check the washing instructions for any clothing you are buying just to make sure you will not be having the added expense of dry cleaning. Lots of wheelchair garments do not have to be dry-cleaned and are the same as other clothing when it comes to washing and drying.

Some wheelchair clothing companies offer a bespoke service, so don't discount a company if you have an idea of what you need but can't find it listed online. It may be possible for the company to make you a customized pair of trousers with fastenings down the side of the legs, or different leg lengths to suit your particular needs. Your clothing should fit you well and be comfortable to wear. Finding a good supplier of wheelchair clothing needn't be difficult. Some companies also offer a personalised service where they will keep a pattern which is yours and cut all of your clothes to your exact measurements. It may cost a little more for this service but for some people the cost is worth the benefit.

Many wheelchair clothes can be further adapted with the clever use of Velcro or studs. Speak to your favourite specialist company to ask if it is possible for some of their standard range to be adapted to suit your individual requirements. If they are unable to arrange this for you they may be able to assist you with ideas of how a garment can be modified. Then all you have to do is use a local tailor to make your unique piece of clothing.

If you are going on holiday or to the pool then using a towelling robe with a matching cushion cover is a good alternative to using a towel for drying off. The robe has a cut-away seat so it simply pops on over your head, but still has enough material at the front to cover your legs. The cushion cover will keep your seat completely dry as it has a waterproof layer at the back.

Many wheelchair users, who push themselves, find that wheelchair gloves are essential. This is because they use a particular part of the palm continuously when they self- propel. There are various types of gloves available for both adults and children, usually leather and often with a gel pad to prevent a sore developing on the area of high use.

Wheelchair clothing and accessories are available from a few specialist companies and you can source information and research from the comfort of your own home via the web. It is relatively simple to search for and read about products you may be interested in. Many disabled organisations may have a forum on their website where you can join in discussions and exchange ideas, reviews and stories with other people who have comparable interests to you. This can be extremely helpful for anybody who has a question that needs answered by somebody who has experienced a similar situation.
